Piano is a musical instrument classified as a keyboard or string instruments. The piano produces sound by striking steel strings with fabric hammers that rebounds allowing the string to vibrate continuously. These vibrations are transmitted through keyboard which amplifies them. The word piano is derived from the original Italian name pianoforte. The piano is an instrument for private household ownership and among the upper class. Piano stands first in importance among musical instruments for its wide spread social influence. Bartolomeo Cristofori of Italy is the one who invented piano in the year 1700.

TYPES OF PIANOS

Earlier the pianos were light weight objects, hardly sturdier in framing than a contemporary harpsichord. But in this modern era important changes were made that created the modern piano. The modern piano has a considerably greater sustain time then the ancient era piano. The piano comes in many different styles, designs, shapes and sizes. Piano has two basic categories like vertical and horizontal pianos. In vertical there are four types of pianos and they are spinet, console, studio and upright. And in horizontal there are six types like petite grand, baby grand, medium grand, parlor grand, semi concert or ballroom and concert grand. Ancient pianos shapes and designs are no longer in use as new styled pianos with better quality and durability are being introduced.

GRAND PIANOS

Grand pianos are one of the basic configurations of modern era pianos. Grand pianos are said to produce finer tones and most responsive key action. Grand pianos have the frame and strings placed horizontally with the strings extending away from the keyboard. This makes the grand piano look large and for which the ideal setting must be spacious with high ceilings. Longer pianos can give better sound and it lowers vibrations of the strings. This is because the strings are tuned much closer to equal temperament in relation to the standard pitch with less amount of stretching. Full size grand's are usually used for public concerts compared to baby grand's. There are different models of grand pianos like concert grand, music room grand, small concert grand, parlor grand, living room grand, medium grand, baby grand, professional grand etc.
